This women's-history month inspired Tharb Aworan portrait recognizes Nichelle Nichols, pioneer American actress, singer, and voice artist. Born Grace Dell Nichols on December 28, 1932, she is best known for her portrayal as Lt. (Nyota) Uhura in the Star Trek Original Series. Her portrayal as Star Trek's "Uhura" was one of the most groundbreaking portrayals for African American female characters in American television history. What's not widely known is that Nichols, disillusioned with Star Trek contemplated quitting, since she had the opportunity to take on other lucrative offers from Broadway. But, she was persuaded by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who said she "could not give up" the series because she was a "vital role model for black children and young women across the country". He also told her that her presence projected hope that African Americans would play an even more prominent role in the near and distant future. She remained with Star Trek as a result and later worked with NASA to recruit more women and minority astronauts, eventually inspiring physician and eventual astronaut, Dr. Mae Jemison.
